The 2016 Toyota 4Runner is an unapologetic, truck-based SUV with go-anywhere capability. It’s rowdy and off-road ready. With newly integrated cell phone navigation and an upgraded audio system, the base SR5 trim now features Entune Audio Plus, there’s a lot to love about this primed-for-action 4Runner.
2016 Toyota 4Runner stands proudly among the last of only a few traditional SUVs left these days, harkening from an institution established before “crossover” entered the auto-related dictionary. It boasts an available three-row seating, a spacious cargo hold and of course Toyota's reputation for reliability. The 4Runner stays true to its truck-based roots as an assertive, able, V6 Sport Utility Vehicle.
Standard equipment includes mudguards and skid plates, while four-wheel-drive models add a dual-range transfer case, hill-start assist and hill-descent control. Going up the trim ladder you can add even better audio and advanced electronic aids for more complete off-roading.
Toyota has even toughened towing capacity for all models but the Limited trim.
If nothing less than a rugged, three-row midsize SUV will do, the 2016 Toyota 4Runner is the only game in town.
The Toyota 4Runner offers four trim levels: SR5, Trail, TRD Pro and Limited. The SR5 and Trail are divided into standard and Premium sub-trims. Five-passenger seating is standard, but an optional 50/50-split third-row seat on the SR5 and Limited models raises passenger capacity to seven.
The 4Runner promises to be a quiet and reliable SUV that will endure years of abuse without complaint, and it has a happy history and reputation to prove that. One beloved feature retained in every 4Runner since 1984 is that you can still lower the rear liftgate window.
The 4Runner is tall, it’s a truck and it’ll cruise highways in quiet comfort. Its precise, steering matches well with the full-size feel of the 4Runner. It has a solid rear axle and body-on-frame construction. Order four-wheel drive, and you get a two-speed transfer case with a low range in the SR5 and Trail models. (The Limited gets a full-time all-wheel-drive system with no low range.)
