|Engine Size:||3.5 L|
The full-size Avalon is Toyota’s leading sedan, a large, family sized vehicle designed for cruising with a powerful engine and lots of luxury touches. To orient the class, it is more luxurious than the ever-popular Camry but a tick below Toyota’s Lexus luxury lineup.
There are five trim levels for the 2017 Toyota Avalon: XLE, XLE Plus, XLE Premium, Touring and Limited; whichever Avalon you choose, you’ll get a well-established sedan with all the latest high tech modern gadgetry along with traditional comfort at a price thousands below a similarly equipped Lexus.
The Avalon underwent a major redesign in 2013 and a significant makeover in 2016. Which brings the 2017 Avalon to the market a gorgeous, mature market leader. Soft-touch leather embellishes most surfaces, and sophisticated styling touches are present throughout the cabin.
The one exciting update to the 2017 Toyota Avalon getting a lot of attention is the active safety features additions. In previous iterations, only the upscale Limited trim offered automatic emergency braking—for 2017 Toyota is making this safety feature and others standard across all trims on nearly all vehicles. The Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P), includes these four safety systems: pre-collision braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert with steering assist, automatic high-beam headlights, and dynamic radar cruise control now available on all Avalon trims.
Looking at the Avalon exterior, you’ll see it is very similar in size to the Camry in width and height but comes in at four inches longer. You’ll feel this extra space in Avalon’s spacious interior. The Avalon's rear seat is extremely roomy and the cavernous trunk offers 16 cubic feet of space. A design plus is ‘round back in the trunk area which provides a wide opening and low lift-over making it easy to load heavy bags. The cabin also offers plenty of well-designed, clever small item storage spaces.
The base level trims XLE and XLE Plus come standard with leather seats, heated up front with dual-zone automatic climate control, an eight-way power-adjustable driver seat (four-way on the passenger side), a leather-wrapped tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, push-button start, and 17-inch alloy wheels. It comes standard with a 3.5-liter V6 engine and a six-speed automatic transmission.
For a base trim, the XLE is extremely well equipped with a luxurious and solid feel; the XLE Plus adds a moonroof and an auto-dimming mirror with a HomeLink-compatible garage door opener. The XLE Premium, Touring and Limited come with more extras such as integrated navigation, wireless smartphone charging and optional ventilated front seats. All XLE and Limited Avalon trims come with a comfort suspension; the Touring offers a suspension that gives the driver more road sensation.
The upper level trims offer even more features such as heated and cooled front seats, tri-zone climate control, and a power rear sunshade, some added technology: built-in navigation, an upgraded sound system, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, a memory driver’s seat and mirrors, and a wireless phone charger in the center console.
Transmission options range from either the V6, 269-hp 3.5-liter gasoline-only engine or a hybrid drivetrain that combines a 4-cylinder engine, a 650V permanent-magnet AC synchronous electric motor, and a 244.8V Ni-MH battery for a net output of 200 hp. The Avalon is designed more for cruising than racing, but either engine choice is strong and peppy. Both conventional and hybrid 2017 Avalon’s come the various trim levels, ranging from the well-equipped XLE to the top-of-the-line Limited.
