Celebrating its 50th birthday, the Toyota Corolla arrives for 2017 with a facelift and a new trim. Loved by a solid fan base of drivers who have kept their Corollas for decades, the Corolla maintains its best-seller, solid, reliable, reputation for economy, long life, safety, and cute design.
This year's Corolla sports a new, slightly more aggressive front grille and new LED headlights, upgraded interior upholstery, a standard rearview camera on all trims, and a bundle of safety features not usually found on compact sedans as well as much of what we saw introduced in 2016. The Corolla is comfortably spacious for 4 adult passengers; it’s quiet and smooth driving and offers a very ample 13 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk.
For 2017 you can expect to see all of last year's trims: L, LE, LE Plus, LE Premium, Eco, Eco Plus, Eco Premium, S, S Plus, and S Premium, plus the new 50th Anniversary Special Edition. This special edition is a trim layered over the S Plus and comes with 50th Anniversary imprints inside and out in a color palette of silver, white or black cherry with interior black cherry stitching. (Only 8,000 will be made).
Inside the 2017 Toyota Corolla there are some subtle trim changes that add more depth to the look of the dashboard and a soft-touch panel on the passenger side. You’ll see a new gauge cluster that incorporates a 3.5-inch information screen on the base trims, while the plus and premium trims sport a 4.2-inch color LCD. You’ll be pleased that, overall, the controls, including the automatic climate controls, radio, etc. look smarter too.
For safety, all Corollas come with Toyota's Star Safety System standard. You’ll get traction control, anti-lock brakes, brake assist, electronic brake-force distribution, start/stop technology, a backup camera and electronic stability control. Other safety features include front side airbags, driver and passenger airbags, and curtain airbags.
The Corolla is powered by a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine producing 132 hp and 128 lb-ft of torque. If you go with the Eco trim, that same 1.8-liter 4-cylinder will produce 140 hp and 126 lb-ft. and that's available only with the CVT. You'll get a little more choice with the gas-powered transmission where you can choose between a 6-speed manual, 4-speed automatic, and CVT.
